Witch Hat Atelier Creator Reveals Shocking Manga Milestone and Magic System Secrets

Witch Hat Atelier creator Kamome Shirahama reveals the manga is only one-third complete, discusses Season 2, and details her magic system.

Acclaimed manga artist Kamome Shirahama has revealed that her hit dark fantasy series Witch Hat Atelier is currently only about one-third of the way through its overall story. Published by Kodansha and animated by Bug Films, the dark fantasy sensation recently wrapped up its critically acclaimed first season on Crunchyroll, with a second anime season already officially in production. Speaking at Anime Expo, Shirahama opened up about the completion of the first season, her workflow, her inclusive world-building, and where the manga is headed next.

How Far Along Is the Witch Hat Atelier Manga Story?

During an interview with Anime Corner at Anime Expo, Kamome Shirahama revealed that the core world-building phase of the story is now complete. When asked about the manga's overall progress across its 98 chapters, Shirahama estimated that the story is roughly one-third finished, pinpointing the Silver Eve arc as a major narrative turning point.

While Shirahama keeps the story dynamic as she writes, she maintains a clear vision for the conclusion:

  • Flexible Progression: The author noted that while smaller plot points adapt during weekly drawing, the grand ending direction is already planned.
  • Long-Term Journey: With 16 collected volumes already published, fans can expect a massive, multi-year story arc before Coco's journey reaches its climax.
  • Anime Milestones: Shirahama described watching Season 1 finish on screen as an exciting experience that allowed her to recalibrate and prepare for the next production stage as Season 2 begins development.

Why Is Diversity and Representation Important in Witch Hat Atelier?

Shirahama addressed the deep inclusion of disabled characters, LGBTQIA+ representation, and racial minorities throughout her fantasy world. For the author, incorporating people from diverse backgrounds is not a calculated choice, but an authentic reflection of everyday life.

Shirahama emphasized that excluding marginalized communities from a living fantasy world would actually feel unnatural to her, stating that bringing real-world diversity into her story is simply a natural progression of her art.

How Was the Witch Hat Atelier Magic System Created?

One of the defining features of Witch Hat Atelier is its intricate, rune-drawing magic system. Shirahama disclosed that she purposefully engineered the rules of magic from day one so that readers could easily understand the logic and even attempt to create their own spells.

She also provided a rare glimpse into her demanding creative schedule:

  • Chapter Workload: Standard 30-page manga chapters generally take between one week and 10 days to complete from start to finish.
  • Detailed Illustrations: Even her most intricate, highly detailed spellbook pages take no more than a single day to illustrate due to her established design workflow.

With the anime's second season officially greenlit for Crunchyroll and the manga entering its next major phase, Witch Hat Atelier continues to solidify its place as one of modern fantasy's finest works.
