Christopher Judge reveals why he turned down live-action Kratos in Prime Video's God of War show before Dave Bautista took over the role.
The long-awaited live-action adaptation of PlayStation's hit Norse saga God of War is currently in production at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video. While Marvel Studios alum Dave Bautista has officially stepped into the sandals of the Ghost of Sparta following an on-set injury to original lead Ryan Hurst, gaming fans almost saw the voice of Kratos himself take the role.
Appearing on a panel at Fan Expo Canada, Christopher Judge, the iconic voice and performance capture actor who brought Kratos to life in Santa Monica Studio's 2018 reboot and God of War Ragnarök, revealed that he physically trained and auditioned for the live-action role before walking away.
Why Did Christopher Judge Turn Down the Live-Action Kratos Role?
During his Fan Expo Canada appearance, the 62-year-old actor opened up about his early discussions regarding the Prime Video adaptation. While initially hesitant, Judge reconsidered after thinking about the legacy he could leave for his family.
He began a rigorous physical regimen to bulk up and even read for the part. However, the reality of leading a massive television production at this stage in his life quickly set in:
- Brutal Shooting Schedules: Judge cited the overwhelming demand of working 16-to-18-hour filming days.
- Strict Physical Maintenance: The constant dieting and high-intensity workouts required to maintain Kratos' godlike physique proved too taxing.
- Memorization Challenges: Judge noted that he unexpectedly struggled to memorize his lines during reads, taking it as a clear signal from his body that his heart was not in the lifestyle required for a series lead.
Reflecting on his past as a lead on Stargate SG-1 during his 30s and 40s, Judge admitted he simply had no desire to relive that demanding grueling cycle at age 62.
How Did Dave Bautista Become Kratos in the Prime Video Series?
Originally, actor Ryan Hurst, who voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, was selected to lead the series as Kratos. Judge voiced strong praise for Hurst, calling him "absolutely the right choice" due to his deep love for the games and his status as a gamer.
However, during production, Hurst suffered a severe torn bicep while filming a stunt, forcing the studio to pause shooting and recast the role. Dave Bautista was subsequently brought in to take over the Ghost of Sparta.
What Does Christopher Judge Think of Dave Bautista's Casting?
Despite previously expressing skepticism over live-action adaptations that do not involve the original video game writers, Judge shared optimistic yet cautious words regarding Bautista taking on Kratos.
Highlighting Bautista's impressive recent weight loss, Judge voiced concern over the physical toll of bulking back up for the role. Ultimately, Judge expressed hope that Bautista stays healthy during the swift turnaround in production and voiced confidence that the former WWE star will deliver a great performance as Kratos.
