Square Enix has officially unveiled Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, during Summer Game Fest. The announcement ends months of speculation about how the studio would title the concluding chapter. Surprisingly, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi, the word that best represents the game’s core theme was never even considered as the title.

What Is the Meaning Behind the Title Final Fantasy VII Revelation

In an interview with Game Informer, Hamaguchi explained that the central theme of the final chapter is resolve, referring to the emotional determination of the party as they approach their last battles. The game explores:

  • Character motivations
  • Emotional conflicts
  • The group’s mindset before the finale

Despite this thematic focus, the team ultimately chose Revelation because it best represented the narrative goal of unveiling long awaited answers.

Why Was “Resolve” Not Considered as the Title

Hamaguchi clarified that although “resolve” is the thematic core, it was never a candidate for the official title. The similarity between “resolve,” “remake,” “rebirth,” and “revelation” was purely coincidental.

According to Hamaguchi, Revelation was chosen because it conveys the idea of uncovering truths, addressing lingering mysteries from Remake and Rebirth.

How Secret Was the Title Selection Process

The naming process was kept extremely confidential. Hamaguchi revealed that:

  • Only five or six people knew the title before the public reveal
  • Most of the development team learned the name live during Summer Game Fest
  • The secrecy was intended to preserve the impact of the announcement

This level of confidentiality is unusual even for major AAA productions.

Is Revelation Connected to the Book of Revelation

Some fans speculated that the title referenced the Book of Revelation due to its conclusive tone. Hamaguchi denied any religious symbolism, stating that the title refers instead to:

  • Revealing unanswered questions
  • Concluding character arcs
  • Delivering final narrative clarity

The goal is to signal to players that this is where everything comes together.

What Can Players Expect From the Final Chapter

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will be the first entry in the trilogy to launch simultaneously on all major platforms:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X and S
  • PC
  • Nintendo Switch 2

The game is scheduled for Spring 2027 and includes several major new features:

  • Combat class system, allowing characters like Tifa to adopt roles such as dark mage
  • Highwind airship, enabling free exploration of the open world
  • Individual emotional arcs for each party member, all concluding in this final chapter

These additions aim to expand both gameplay depth and narrative payoff.
