Filming for the third season of The Last of Us has come to an unexpected halt in Vancouver.
According to British Columbia’s official production directory, the series, listed under the working title Calm Current, stopped shooting on June 1 and will remain paused until June 28.
Production originally began on March 2 and was scheduled to run straight through November 27. With HBO offering no public explanation, speculation spread quickly, including unfounded rumors of cancellation.
However, production records still list the same completion date, indicating the series remains on track.
The FIFA World Cup Likely Forced the Break
Industry sources point to a practical reason: the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Canada is hosting 13 matches across Toronto and Vancouver between June 11 and July 19.
Large‑scale city disruptions, security measures and venue preparations appear to be the most plausible cause of the filming pause.
A Season Marked by Big Creative Changes
When cameras resume rolling, Season 3 will look very different behind the scenes.
The biggest shift is the departure of Neil Druckmann, who stepped away from the series in July 2025 to focus on Naughty Dog’s new project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
This leaves Craig Mazin as the sole showrunner moving forward.
Abby Takes Center Stage
Narratively, Season 3 pivots away from Joel and Ellie to focus on Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever.
The season adapts the second half of The Last of Us Part II, revisiting the same three days in Seattle but from Abby’s perspective.
Expect deeper exploration of:
- Her father’s death
- Her personal journey
- The events leading to the Season 2 cliffhanger
HBO’s Casey Bloys has even hinted this could be the final season, though the door remains open.
