Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, has revealed new details about Final Fantasy VII Revelation, coming in 2027 to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
One of the biggest clarifications is that player choices will not change the ending. Instead, decisions influence how players interpret each character as they approach the final battle, adding emotional nuance rather than branching finales.
The FITS System Reinvents Character Roles
Revelation introduces the FITS system, a job‑inspired customization mechanic that lets players assign classic Final Fantasy roles to any character.
This means you can create:
- A Black Mage Cloud
- A tank‑focused Tifa
- A healer Barret
- Or any unconventional combination you want
Jobs add new abilities and combat options, not just stat tweaks.
For players who prefer the default look, a separate skin system allows any job to be used without changing outfits. Fan‑favorite costumes from Rebirth, including swimsuits and Shinra uniforms, will return.
Highwind Arrives Early for Full World Exploration
Hamaguchi confirmed that players will unlock the Highwind roughly four to five hours into the game, depending on optional content.
Once obtained, the entire world becomes freely explorable.
Unlike Rebirth’s segmented regions, Revelation features a fully interconnected world, with difficulty spikes that encourage caution and curiosity during exploration.
A Story You Can’t See All at Once
Revelation includes extensive side content and branching storylines.
While the main narrative remains fixed, optional stories can diverge based on player decisions, making it impossible to experience everything in a single playthrough.
One notable absence: Bone Village will not appear.
For players who want to focus on the story, an optional mode will auto‑adjust character levels to match narrative progression, allowing them to skip most side content without falling behind.
Post‑Game Content Goes Beyond the Final Boss
Revelation places heavy emphasis on post‑game exploration.
Chapter select returns, but the real focus is on superboss‑level encounters, including:
- Weapons
- High‑tier summons like Knights of the Round
These challenges are designed to surpass the difficulty of the final boss.
Mini‑Games Stay, but Rewards Change
Despite mixed reactions to Rebirth’s mini‑games, Hamaguchi says their presence was never in question.
Mini‑games remain central to the identity of Final Fantasy VII, but rewards have been rebalanced:
- Combat content gives gameplay upgrades
- Mini‑games give cosmetics, skins and customization options
And yes, snowboarding returns.
Chadley Moves to the Highwind
Chadley’s role has been reworked.
Instead of appearing constantly in the field, he now operates from a dedicated research area aboard the Highwind, studying Meteor and supporting the party throughout their journey.
Entering the Final Production Phase
The team is now focused on polishing assets, lighting, system balance and final adjustments as the game moves toward its 2027 release.
