11 bit studios has announced The Alters: Last Variable, a major expansion launching July 13 for consoles and PC.
This new chapter adds roughly 20 hours of content, introducing deeper systems, a new underground base and a refined gameplay loop built around terraforming hostile terrain into lush, oasis like biomes.
Build an Underground Base and Shape the Planet
Last Variable shifts the focus toward transforming the planet itself.
Players will:
- Terraform barren regions into thriving oases
- Construct and expand a subterranean base
- Manage long term survival while the scorching sun forces extended cryosleep
The new loop blends engineering, strategy and environmental mastery into a more ambitious version of The Alters’ core design.
Lead a Team of Brilliant Minds Who All Look Like You
As always, your crew is made up of Alters: alternate versions of Jan, each shaped by different life choices and scientific expertise.
This time, you will rely on specialists like:
- Geologist Jan
- Biologist Jan
- Chemist Jan
- Physicist Jan
Each one has their own interpretation of science, ethics and the mission itself. Their disagreements become just as important as their discoveries.
Time Moves Differently for Those Left Awake
While you sleep safely in cryostasis, the Alters working in the Field Laboratories do not have that luxury.
They age. They tire. They change.
The expansion leans heavily into the emotional and psychological consequences of time passing unevenly between you and your team.
Could this vulnerability reshape who they become and how they see you?
A Mystery Hidden Within the Oasis
Unraveling the truth behind the Oasis requires cooperation, analysis and trust.
But with each Alter holding their own beliefs and motivations, the scientific mission becomes a human one too.
Last Variable pushes the narrative into deeper moral territory, asking what happens when survival, identity and time collide.
