CoMix Wave Films, the studio known worldwide for its collaborations with Makoto Shinkai on hits like Your Name and Suzume, is preparing to release its newest original anime short, Shiranuhi, in Japanese theaters on August 21, 2026.
A new poster revealed on the studio’s official X account sets the tone with a chilling tagline: “In that light, I wished for my father’s death.”
A Summer in 1996, a Boy in Crisis
Set in the coastal town of Kumamoto at the end of summer 1996, Shiranuhi follows Minato, a 10‑year‑old boy living under the shadow of his alcoholic father.
His only escape is the presence of Ben‑chan, a mysterious, goddess‑like figure who appears on Benten Island. With her, Minato feels seen, safe and understood.
But when Minato is set to be transferred to a foster home, he realizes his time with Ben‑chan is slipping away.
Desperate and afraid, he turns to the Shiranuhi, a strange light said to grant a single wish.
The wish he makes, born from pain and resentment, becomes a curse he cannot undo.
A Director With an Unlikely Path
Shiranuhi marks the commercial anime debut of Ryo Katanosaka, an independent filmmaker who, until recently, worked in the fresh fish section of a supermarket while creating films on the side.
His unconventional journey adds a raw, personal edge to the project and signals CoMix Wave Films’ interest in elevating new voices.
A Soundtrack of Emotion and Atmosphere
The music is composed by Taro Umebayashi, known for his work on Yuri!!! on Ice and Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction.
The theme song is performed by Ichiko Aoba, whose ethereal folk vocals have earned her a devoted international following.
A Bold Casting Choice for Minato
The role of Minato is voiced by ano, the singer and performer who recently appeared in Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction.
Her casting raised eyebrows, as she is voicing a young boy, but her dedication to the role shines through.
She shared her experience:
“I was very interested in voice acting, so I was extremely grateful. I felt anxious about playing a male role, so I experimented with many ways of using my voice. It was difficult, but I learned a lot. Despite the challenges, it was a very positive and enriching experience.”

With its emotional weight, supernatural mystery and grounded human pain, Shiranuhi is shaping up to be one of 2026’s most striking animated releases.
