Project Mara Officially Canceled as Ninja Theory Shifts All Forces to Senua

Ninja Theory has officially canceled Project Mara, the experimental horror title first announced in 2020.
Studio director Dom Matthews confirmed the decision in an Xbox Wire article, pairing the news with the surprise reveal of Senua, the third entry in the Hellblade series.

Project Mara was pitched as a hyper‑realistic psychological horror experience set entirely inside a single photorealistic apartment. After a brief development diary in 2021, the project went silent. Now the cancellation is final.

Why the Project Was Cut

Ninja Theory has 85 developers, and Matthews explained that splitting the team between a small experimental project and a large, ambitious flagship title no longer made sense.
Project Mara never advanced far beyond concept work, and the studio had effectively stopped active development long before the official announcement.

Matthews put it plainly:
“With the whole team working on this game, I made the decision not to work on Project Mara anymore. These decisions are never easy, but I wanted all 85 creatives focused on realizing what Senua can be.”

This marks the first time since DmC: Devil May Cry in 2013 that the entire studio is united behind a single project.

Senua Becomes the Studio’s New Centerpiece

Senua is the third game in the Hellblade series, and its scale is dramatically larger than its predecessors.
The first Hellblade was built by just 25 people. Now, with 85 developers, Ninja Theory aims to push every aspect further:

  • Combat systems
  • Traversal
  • Puzzle design
  • Cinematic storytelling

Matthews says the team is drawing on experience from DmC, Enslaved, Heavenly Sword, and the previous Hellblade titles to create a more unified and expansive gameplay experience.

A Return to Psychological Depth

The Hellblade series is known for its portrayal of mental health, and Senua continues that tradition.
The official description places the protagonist “trapped between life and death in a fragmented vision of purgatory,” fighting to reach the afterlife and reunite with those she lost.

The themes remain intense, introspective and emotionally charged.

Release Plans for Senua

Senua is scheduled to launch in 2027 for:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • PC
  • Game Pass

With the entire studio now focused on this single project, Ninja Theory is aiming for its most ambitious narrative and technical achievement yet.
