The Death Stranding movie is no longer just a mysterious announcement.
During IGN Live 2026, director and screenwriter Michael Sarnoski confirmed that the script is in its final stages, with both Hideo Kojima and A24 already reviewing a draft. Revisions are underway, and everyone involved seems energized by the direction of the project.
“I’m writing the script now and hopefully almost finished,” Sarnoski said. “Kojima and A24 have read a draft. We’re working on revisions together, and everyone seems very enthusiastic.”
Not a Direct Adaptation, but a New Story in the Same Universe
One of the biggest creative decisions is already locked in:
The film will not retell the story of the games.
Instead, Sarnoski is crafting a parallel narrative with new characters and a fresh perspective on the Death Stranding universe.
It is the same approach he used for A Quiet Place: Day One, where he expanded the world without retreading the original plot.
Sarnoski says the themes of connection and expression made it easy to find a character who fits naturally into Kojima’s world.
As for cameos from game characters?
“You might see some characters from the game appear,” he teased, keeping things intentionally vague.
Kojima Recognized Every Cinematic Reference
One of the most striking moments from the interview was Sarnoski describing Kojima’s reaction to the script.
Without any explanation, Kojima immediately identified every cinematic influence embedded in the writing.
“He said, ‘Oh, you’re making a reference to Come and See! I see that. I like that.’ He knows the films incredibly well.”
The reference is telling.
Come and See is a harrowing 1985 Soviet anti‑war film, suggesting the Death Stranding movie may lean into a darker, heavier tone than typical game adaptations.
