Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien reunite on screen for thriller No Free Lunch. Check out full plot, cast, and release details!
Nearly three decades after battling giant alien bugs in Paul Verhoeven's 1997 sci-fi classic Starship Troopers, iconic duo Denise Richards (Wild Things, The World Is Not Enough) and Casper Van Dien (Sleepy Hollow, Alita: Battle Angel) are officially sharing the screen once again. The actors have officially wrapped production in Hamilton, Ontario, on No Free Lunch, a tense indie thriller directed by action veteran Damian Lee (Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe). The film serves as the third entry in a joint multi-picture slate from Horizon Line and March On Productions, following Silent Nightfall and Greatest Actress. With domestic distribution secured by Quiver Distribution and international sales handled by Red Sea Media at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) market, the thriller is officially scheduled for a theatrical release in spring 2027.
What Is the Plot of No Free Lunch?
Swapping deep-space military combat for a grounded, race-against-time crime drama, No Free Lunch plunges its cast into a high-stakes hostage situation.
- A Nightmare College Drop-Off: The narrative centers on a mother and daughter duo played by Arcadia Kendal and Lara Daans, whose routine drive to university turns into a fight for survival when they are abducted.
- A Twisted Captor: The pair are kidnapped by a deranged former surgeon, played by Sebastian Pigott (Slasher, Murdoch Mysteries), who is obsessed with fulfilling a promise made to his late mother.
- Sadistic Mind Games: The captor subjects the mother and daughter to a series of psychological games with plans to force one of them into marriage before executing a fatal plot.
- Race Against the Clock: Richards and Van Dien play a pair of law enforcement officials, a detective and an FBI agent, who must piece together paper-thin leads to locate the victims before it becomes too late.
Why Is the Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien Reunion Significant for Sci-Fi Fans?
While Richards and Van Dien have made joint appearances at fan conventions over the years, No Free Lunch marks their very first actual on-screen acting collaboration since playing Carmen Ibanez and Johnny Rico in 1997's Starship Troopers.
- Cult Classic Legacy: Starship Troopers launched both actors into mainstream stardom and has grown into a massive cult favorite beloved for its satirical take on militarism and creature-feature action.
- A Dramatic Role Reversal: Rather than playing young, star-crossed military cadets in an intergalactic war, the duo take on veteran, grizzled law enforcement figures tackling a dark crime mystery.
- Proven Production Pipeline: Produced by Bennet De Brabandere with executive producer Richard Salvatore, No Free Lunch shares its production slate with other star-studded thrillers, including Silent Nightfall starring Stana Katic and Elisha Cuthbert.
