Why Were Rocket Town and Wutai Cut From FFVII Rebirth and What Will Change in Revelation

FFVII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi explains why Rocket Town and Wutai were cut from Rebirth and how the trilogy’s finale expands the world.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation, launching in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store, is shaping up to be the most ambitious entry in Square Enix’s remake trilogy. In a new interview with The Gamer, director Naoki Hamaguchi detailed why major locations were absent from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, how the world map has evolved, and what players should expect from the trilogy’s conclusion.

What Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final entry in Square Enix’s modern remake trilogy. It follows Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, concluding the reimagined storyline while expanding the world, characters, and lore of the original 1997 classic.

The game will be available on:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X and Series S
  • Nintendo Switch 2
  • Steam
  • Epic Games Store
  • Microsoft Store

Why Were Rocket Town and Wutai Missing From Rebirth

Hamaguchi confirmed that Rocket Town and Wutai were intentionally excluded from Rebirth early in development. Including them would have disrupted the pacing and narrative structure of the second game.

According to Hamaguchi:

  • Their absence was a deliberate structural decision
  • Both locations will have major roles in Revelation
  • Their expanded importance benefits both the story and gameplay progression

Rather than compressing these iconic areas, the team chose to give them the scale and narrative weight they deserve in the finale.

Which Returning Locations Will Change in Revelation

Hamaguchi revealed that areas already visited in Remake and Rebirth will return in Revelation, but with significant changes.

Players can expect:

  • New story developments
  • Environmental changes caused by Meteor
  • Additional quests and worldbuilding
  • Expanded traversal and exploration

Hamaguchi described the world map as “vaster and more substantial than any seen previously in the trilogy.”

How Does Revelation Connect to the FFVII Compilation

The director reaffirmed that the remake trilogy was conceived as part of the larger Final Fantasy VII Compilation, which includes:

  • Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
  • Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
  • Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII

Hamaguchi hinted that Revelation will include more references and elements from these works than Rebirth, though he avoided confirming how the trilogy’s ending will align with established canon.

He clarified the current stance:

Advent Children should be considered part of the original FFVII canon, not necessarily the Remake canon.
The Remake series is incomplete, and the team will not confirm its canonical relationship until the ending is revealed.

Will Final Fantasy VII Revelation Change the Original Ending

Hamaguchi remained intentionally vague. He did not confirm whether the ending will diverge from the 1997 original, but he emphasized that surprise is no longer the priority.

After nearly a decade working on the trilogy, his focus is on:

  • Delivering a conclusion that feels earned
  • Ensuring players feel the journey was worth taking
  • Avoiding an ending that leaves players with regrets

The goal is emotional satisfaction rather than shock value.
