Thief: The Dark Project Remastered Sneaks Back Into the Spotlight for Winter 2027

Atari, Nightdive Studios and Eidos Montreal took the stage at the PC Gaming Show 2026 to announce Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, launching in winter 2027 for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
Built in the KEX Engine, this new edition brings the original 1998 classic and all Thief Gold content into the modern era while preserving the tension, intelligence and atmosphere that defined the stealth genre.

Garrett’s Shadowy World Reimagined

Players once again step into the boots of Garrett, the master thief navigating a world of corruption, conspiracy and darkness.
Thief is widely regarded as one of the first true “pure stealth” games and a foundational pillar of immersive sims.
The remaster aims to keep that legacy intact while enhancing the experience for today’s hardware.

Classic Stealth, Sharpened for Modern Play

Nightdive Studios has retained the systems that made Thief iconic, including:

  • Dynamic AI that reacts to sound and visibility
  • A central light and shadow stealth model
  • Tools like rope arrows, gas bombs and distraction devices
  • Silent takedowns and enemy incapacitation
  • NPCs who investigate noises and communicate with each other

The goal is authenticity with refinement, not reinvention.

Visual and Technical Upgrades

The remaster introduces a suite of improvements designed to modernize the experience without losing its identity:

  • Updated textures and models
  • Improved cutscenes and animations
  • A revamped interface with a weapon and item wheel
  • A mission selector for flexible replay
  • Full support for community‑made campaigns, honoring more than 20 years of fan creativity

It is Thief as players remember it, but sharper, smoother and more accessible.

A Cornerstone of Stealth Gaming

Thief: The Dark Project remains one of the most influential stealth games ever made.
Its emphasis on vulnerability, environmental awareness and systemic design shaped countless titles that followed.
The remaster brings that legacy to a new generation, inviting players to rediscover a world where every footstep matters and every shadow is a weapon.
