Stronghold 4 Charges Into 2026 With Unreal Engine Power and a Medieval Comeback

Firefly Studios used the PC Gaming Show 2026 to officially unveil Stronghold 4, confirming a PC release later this year on Steam.
A playable demo arrives June 23, giving fans their first chance to step back into the castle‑building chaos the series is known for.

Nick Tannahill, head of Firefly Studios, even joked about the timing, calling the 2026 lineup “the showdown of the century” as Stronghold 4 launches in the same year as Grand Theft Auto VI.

A Medieval Prequel With a New Hero

Stronghold 4 takes players back to medieval England, long before the events of the original game.
You play as Penryn, a humble shepherd whose quiet life is shattered, pushing him into a journey filled with danger, ambition and the harsh realities of medieval survival.

The story features a full voice cast including Ben Starr, Samantha Beart, Wales Hamonde and Harry McEntire, bringing new and returning characters to life.

Built in Unreal Engine 5 for a Living Medieval World

For the first time in the series, Stronghold moves to Unreal Engine 5, dramatically expanding the scale and realism of castle life.
Players will feel the impact of a dynamic medieval world on their economy and warfare, including:

  • Snow that slows crop growth
  • Heavy rain that reduces archer range
  • Deadly traps and defensive structures
  • Environmental threats that strike from inside and outside the castle walls

It is the most atmospheric and reactive Stronghold yet.

A Massive Early Access Launch

The Early Access version arrives loaded with content, including:

  • 22‑mission story campaign
  • Full Skirmish mode
  • Free Build
  • Custom Skirmish with up to 8 AI opponents

Online multiplayer, an economy‑focused campaign and cooperative play will be added later.

Classic Strategy With Modern Upgrades

Stronghold 4 blends the series’ signature real‑time strategy and city‑building with modern improvements.
Players can expect:

  • Enhanced medieval warfare mechanics
  • Deeper economic management
  • New in‑game events
  • Influential weather systems
  • Larger maps than ever before
  • Bloodier sieges and more cinematic battles

It is a return to the roots of the franchise, but bigger, sharper and more ambitious.

Penryn’s Path to Knighthood Begins

Stronghold 4 invites players to follow Penryn’s rise from peasant to knight while defending their lands from outlaws, rival lords and the unforgiving elements.
With next‑gen visuals and expanded systems, it aims to capture the spirit of classic strategy games while pushing the series into a new era.
