Ghost in the Shell Returns in 2026 With a Bold New Vision and a Haunting New Trailer

With its premiere set for July 7 2026, Bandai Namco Filmworks has unveiled a fresh trailer for The Ghost in the Shell (Kōkaku Kidōtai THE GHOST IN THE SHELL), offering the first real look at the franchise’s newest anime incarnation. The preview also features the ethereal ending theme Blue by MILLENNIUM PARADE feat. Saya Gray and Daniel Caesar, setting an atmospheric tone for what is shaping up to be a striking reboot.

Science SARU Takes the Helm

Animation duties fall to Science SARU, the studio behind titles like Dandadan and DEVILMAN crybaby. Direction comes from Moko‑chan, known for key animation work on The Heike Story and Tatami Time Machine Blues. The script is penned by Toh Enjoe, whose credits span Space Dandy and Godzilla Singular Point, while Shūhei Handa handles character designs after contributing to Little Witch Academia and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

The production committee includes Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, Science SARU and Production IG, marking a collaboration between some of the most influential names in modern anime.

A Legacy Marked by Loss and Reinvention

The series was first announced in May 2024, just months before the passing of Atsuko Tanaka, the beloved voice of Major Motoko Kusanagi, in August 2024 at age 61. Her legacy looms large over the franchise, and fans are eager to see how this new version honors the character she helped define.

Masamune Shirow Reflects on a Franchise With Many Lives

Ghost in the Shell creator Masamune Shirow shared his thoughts on the project, noting that this marks the fourth major anime interpretation of his work, or the tenth depending on how one categorizes the various films and series. He described this new adaptation as potentially the beginning of a “second generation,” acknowledging the age of the original manga while expressing hope that the new series will once again deliver a visually captivating experience.

A Story Where Humanity and Technology Collide

The official description revisits the franchise’s core themes. In a world where humans rely on cybernetic implants and robots incorporate human tissue, the line between man and machine has nearly vanished. Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg super‑agent, hunts cybercriminals capable of hacking the human mind itself. Her pursuit of the elusive Puppeteer pulls her into a realm where consciousness, identity and the soul are questioned at every turn.

A Cyberpunk Classic Reimagined

With a new creative team, a bold visual style and a renewed focus on the philosophical roots of the franchise, this 2026 adaptation aims to reintroduce Ghost in the Shell to a new generation while honoring its storied past.
