A New Face at the Center of the Saga
Sony closed Tuesday’s State of Play with the announcement of God of War Laufey, a major shift for the franchise as Faye steps into the role of protagonist for the first time. Known as Laufey and long established as Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, she now becomes the driving force of the next chapter from Santa Monica Studio.
A Journey Beyond Kratos
The reveal trailer highlights an adventure rooted in Faye’s origins as a giant warrior of Jötunheim. The footage explores events never shown in previous games, marking a departure from the Kratos‑centered narrative that has defined the series for nearly two decades. This new direction positions Faye as the lens through which players will discover hidden corners of the God of War universe.
A Faster and More Magical Combat Style
Early impressions suggest that the combat will build on the action-focused foundation of the Norse-era titles while introducing a more agile and magic-driven approach. Faye’s fighting style appears distinct from Kratos’, emphasizing speed, fluid movement, and new abilities. The trailer also introduces fresh companions and unfamiliar creatures that will accompany her throughout the journey.
Expanding the Mythology
The narrative hints at a broader mythological scope, moving beyond the Nordic realms that shaped the last two games. Brief references to Eastern and Egyptian influences appear in the reveal, suggesting a world that stretches far beyond the Nine Realms and opens the door to new cultural inspirations.
A Long-Rumored Project Finally Confirmed
Led by Cory Barlog, director of God of War (2018), the project had been the subject of speculation for months before its official unveiling. Despite the reveal, Sony has not provided a release date. For now, God of War Laufey is confirmed exclusively for PlayStation 5.
