Echoes of Aincrad Demo Is Live With Full Character Creation and Transferable Saves

The Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online demo is now live with five missions, full character creation, and save transfer support. Here is everything included.

The long‑awaited Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online demo is officially available starting today on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The free trial offers a substantial look at the upcoming action RPG, including five full missions, complete access to the character creator, and the ability to test every weapon type in the game. Even better, demo progress carries over to the full release, with one important exception for players who choose the punishing Death Game mode.

What Is Included in the Echoes of Aincrad Demo

The free demo provides a surprisingly deep slice of gameplay. Players can:

  • Complete five full missions
  • Create a fully customized avatar
  • Experiment with all weapon types
  • Explore early areas of Aincrad
  • Test combat systems, party mechanics, and progression

The demo is available on all platforms where the full game will launch.

How Save Transfer Works in the Demo

Progress made in the demo can be transferred to the full game as long as you stay on the same platform. This includes:

  • Character appearance
  • Mission progress
  • Inventory and equipment
  • Skill unlocks

The only exception is Death Game mode, which does not allow save transfer because the mode permanently deletes your save file if your character dies.

How Echoes of Aincrad Changes the Sword Art Online Formula

Unlike previous Sword Art Online titles, Echoes of Aincrad does not cast the player as Kirito or any other established character. Instead, the game introduces a fully customizable protagonist whose story unfolds alongside the familiar cast.

Kirito, Asuna, and other major characters appear as companions, not player avatars. This shift allows fans to experience the Aincrad arc from a personal perspective for the first time in the franchise’s gaming history.

The premise remains faithful to the original storyline. Ten thousand players are trapped inside the VRMMORPG Sword Art Online, where death in the game means death in reality. The theme song, “Live to Survive,” is performed by Aimer, known for her work on Demon Slayer and Fate/stay night.

Who Is Developing Echoes of Aincrad

The game is developed by Game Studio and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the long‑time steward of Sword Art Online’s gaming adaptations.

The bonus anime Unanswered//butterfly, included in the Ultimate and Aincrad editions, focuses on secondary characters during the events of the original Sword Art Online storyline. It serves as additional narrative content that complements the main game.

A Brief Look at the Sword Art Online Franchise

Sword Art Online began as a web novel by Reki Kawahara in 2002 before evolving into one of the most influential modern shonen franchises. The anime adaptation premiered in 2012 and has since expanded into multiple seasons, films, and spinoffs.

The light novel series is currently at Volume 29, covering arcs such as Moon Cradle and Unital Ring, which follow the conclusion of the Alicization arc in 2016.
